Thomas Horn

One cannot talk about art in southern Illinois without talking about Thomas Horn. He is the ubiquitous artist, you'll likely see him and his eye-catching wares at every winery art and craft fair. Currently his art hangs on a semi-permanent basis in at least 2 wineries and also the Art Lovers gallery in Carbondale. He is a Metal Sculptor for 27 years, working primarily in copper and fused glass. Here's Tom in action up at Cedarhurst earlier this year.

Recently he has launched a jewelry line. He spent a year studying the silver variety, and produced it as a craft for 5 years with antler and semi-precous stones, and now in copper and fused glass.

Kris Killman

Artist Biography: Kris Killman is a self-taught artist painting from his own photographs for 19 years. He has shown his watercolors in California, Memphis and St. Louis as well as regionally. Recently, he has painted murals for the Federal Government, City of Metropolis and private citizens. He is a founding member of the Little Egypt Arts Association and the Artistic Lens Photographic Society. Kris has taught watercolor classes and workshops, and won numerous ribbons and awards. His work is in many private collections as well as state and commercial institutions. He has remained creative for many years and wouldn't have it any other way.

North Western Wisconsin this year is brillant and aglow. My jaw dropped at every end in the road. These shots were taken the second week of October this year. The main reason for me to be in that area at this time of year was to take a watercolor workshop from a brillant master watercolor artist name Nita Engle. She's 83 years old and this was her last workshop. Or so it was said. She said that last year. Any way you slice the cake I witness a great painter working her craft and was left in awe as she used 6 or 7 bush strokes to paint in an entire sky scene on a full size sheet of watercolor paper. She would wet that paper, put in the paint and rotate that board the paper was stapled too and like Emerald Lagase would say "BAAM!" There it was.

There is this line in the sand where most of us mortals reside. The geniues are on the other side. Nita Engle is over there. Isn't it true that all the great ones make it look easy? An effortless swing of the bat and a home run king sends another one out of the park. I witnessed true greatness painting at her last workshop. Her last at bat. She was forgetting more than I'll ever learn. Just that the forgetting was getting more frequent and disrupting her workshop at times.

I was so thankful to have met her and painted with her. From an artist stand point it's like getting to sing with Frank Sinatra at his last concert. You never forget. Nita's gone back to her Yellow Dog river in Michigan where she captured so many of her memorable images. Gone home to finish out the last of her unfinished work and I wish her well.

2. From the Red Ear in Alto Pass

new art space in alto pass: the red earfirst official call for work: image-makers and travelwork will be collected until september 14th.

to all area artists and potential participants:i have spoken to many of you about collecting artwork, particularly photography, for the first official group show at the red ear. for those of you who don't know, the red ear is located in a commercial building space on the alto pass boardwalk, right across from the root beer saloon. it is about 1600 sq. feet, white walls, and decent lighting. although i hope to be doing more with the red ear in the coming months--like workshops, artist socials/potlucks, and art trading sessions--at the moment, it is functioning as a gallery space and a wifi hot spot.

this show will be of work that was done while image-makers (not limited to photographers) have been traveling. this theme came about mostly b/c i know there are lots of you out there that have been traveling and shooting; but more so, i hope to collect work that represents travel and movement through both foreign and familiar places--landscapes, portraits, street photography, the snapshot aesthetic and documentary would all apply. by collecting work from several artists, i hope to install a show that will share experiences and perspectives with the viewer from the image-makers point of view, but at the same time, will give the viewer a chance to see photography as a method of both remembering and recording.the call for work is not limited to photography, or even 2D work, so please keep this in mind as you think about what you might have in your archive or studio to show--also, please spread the word to those you think might also be interested.

if you are interested in submitting anything to this call for work, please respond as soon as possible. i will be collecting work until september 14th, and the show will be opening the following weekend. work will be collected in carbondale, and there will also be drop off times at the alto pass location.
